Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Concept Development & Requirements
- Translate complex engineering challenges into clear mechanical and system requirements.
- Apply first-principles engineering methods, including free-body diagrams, energy balances, and pressure/flow analysis, to evaluate and develop solutions.
Subsystem Design & CAD
- Develop mechanical subsystem specifications and system layouts.
- Define mechanical, electrical, fluid, and other critical interfaces between components and subsystems.
- Create and maintain detailed, high-fidelity 3D CAD models that accurately represent as-built hardware.
Mechanical & Structural Analysis
- Perform engineering analysis involving multi-axis mechanical stresses, vibration and instability, fatigue, thermal growth and derating, tolerance stack-ups, and high-pressure/high-temperature fluid behavior.
- Identify potential mechanical risks and incorporate findings into design improvements.
Manufacturing & Vendor Collaboration
- Work directly with fabrication partners, suppliers, and component vendors throughout the design and build process.
- Ensure designs are manufacturable, practical, and capable of meeting real-world performance requirements.
Prototype, Test & Iterate
- Develop test plans and design test fixtures or rigs needed to validate mechanical systems.
- Specify appropriate instrumentation and support hands-on testing.
- Troubleshoot hardware and test results, identify root causes, and rapidly implement design improvements.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 5–7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
- Proven experience owning complex mechanical design and build projects from concept through fabrication, testing, and implementation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and first-principles engineering analysis.
- Experience with detailed 3D CAD modeling and mechanical system integration.
- Ability to evaluate structural, thermal, vibration, fatigue, tolerance, and fluid-related design considerations.
- Experience working directly with manufacturers, fabrication partners, suppliers, and component vendors.
- Comfortable working hands-on with prototypes, test equipment, instrumentation, and physical hardware.
- Able to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment where designs are developed, built, tested, and refined quickly.
